What is Instagram Aspect Ratio?
Instagram accepts a small, precise set of shapes. In the feed, posts can be square 1:1 (1080×1080), portrait up to 4:5 (1080×1350) or landscape 1.91:1 (1080×566) - the feed itself crops everything else. Stories, Reels and profile video are 9:16 vertical at 1080×1920. The strategic choice is the feed ratio: 4:5 portrait occupies the most screen area while users scroll, which is why brands and creators default to it, while 1:1 remains the safe universal shape for grid consistency and repurposed content.
Common Uses for Instagram Aspect Ratio
- Export feed photos at 1080×1350 for maximum feed presence
- Keep the grid consistent with square 1080×1080 posts
- Produce Reels and Stories that fill the screen at 1080×1920
- Crop wide photos to 4:5 without losing the subject
Choosing between 4:5 and 1:1
4:5 wins on scroll: at 1080×1350 it takes about 25% more vertical feed space than a square, and space is attention. 1:1 wins on logistics: it is the shape of profile grids, ad placements and cross-posting, and it crops from any source with the least loss. A common system is 4:5 for hero posts and campaigns, 1:1 for everything routine - decided before shooting, so the photographer frames for it.
Cropping from camera ratios to Instagram
From a 3:2 landscape DSLR frame to 4:5 portrait the crop is severe - 47% of the width goes - which is why Instagram-first shoots turn the camera vertically (2:3 native, a small trim to 4:5) or leave generous central margin. Phone photographers have it easier: the native 4:3 sensor in portrait orientation trims to 4:5 with almost no loss. Run your numbers in the calculator before the shoot, not after.
