What is Aspect Ratio for Print?

Print has fixed shapes: paper comes in standard ratios and the photo must match or be cropped. The common photo papers descend from film: 4×6 inches is exactly the 3:2 of a 35 mm frame, so camera files print with no trim. 8×10 is 5:4, portrait-paper shaped, requiring a width crop from 3:2 files. A-series paper (A4, A3) uses the √2 ratio (1:1.414), chosen so each size folds from the next larger one. The second half of print maths is resolution: at photo quality (300 DPI) an inch needs 300 pixels, so an 8×10 print needs 2400×3000 pixels - and the ratio and the DPI must both work out before you order.

How many pixels do I need for an 8×10 print?
2400×3000 pixels at 300 DPI (8×300 by 10×300). Your file must also be 5:4 - a 3:2 DSLR file at 3000×4500 has enough pixels but the wrong shape, so it gets cropped to 3000×3750 usable area.
Why does my photo not fit the paper?

What ratio is A4 paper?
1:1.414 (the square root of 2). All A-series sizes share it - A3 folded in half is A4 exactly. It is a paperwork ratio, not a photo one, so photos printed on A4 always need a crop or a white border.

It is the photo-quality standard for close viewing. Wall art viewed from a metre away is fine at 150-180 DPI, posters at 100-150. Halve the DPI and you halve the pixels needed - a 24×36 poster at 150 DPI needs 3600×5400.
